Cover
Let’s start our review of the WinkBeds mattress with the cover. The first thing I’d like to mention is that it’s not removable. It’s a rather standard design among numerous mattresses these days. However, a non-removable cover means that you’ll have to spot-clean it only. As an alternative, you might want to get a mattress protector to keep your WinkBed fresh and spotless.
Now, as for the cover material, I’ve got good news. The WinkBed uses Tencel lyocell for the cover, which is a natural fabric derived from eucalyptus. The cover feels super smooth and even cool to the touch. It’s quilted with the pillow-top layer and thus, has a tufted design that gives this mattress a luxurious look.
However, it doesn’t end there. Tencel does a great job of wicking the excess moisture away. Plus, this fabric is naturally breathable. Therefore, the WinkBed cover should aid temperature regulation during the night and would work for hot sleepers.
Construction
Another aspect we need to cover in this WinkBeds mattress review is the construction of this particular model. The combination of layers and materials has a direct effect on your comfort and your sleep quality. So, let’s see what the WinkBed hides under its cover:
- quilted pillow-top that uses gel-infused foam to guarantee cooler sleep. All this while delivering much needed pressure relief. I was testing the Luxury Firm model, which has 2 layers of foam in its pillow-top layer. However, if you choose Soft, you will enjoy more cushioning thanks to the 3-layer pillow-top design;
- wrapped coils that serve as the support core. Because each coil is individually encased, this layer can provide zoned, targeted support. The independent coils compress more under heavier body parts without affecting the rest of the support system and thus, provides different levels of support for different body parts;
- Extra-edge support system which involves enhanced coils around the edges of the mattress. They serve to make sure the WinkBed can guarantee proper support across its entire perimeter;
- high-density polyfoam layer that provides extra support for the coils and can help minimize motion transfer.
Off-Gassing
Sometimes, new mattresses come with a bit more than that “new mattress” smell. Some shoppers have to deal with a strong chemical off-gassing when unpacking their mattress, and that’s not a pleasant situation (especially if you are sensitive to odors).
Don’t worry, though:
With the WinkBed, you won’t have to deal with strong off-gassing. Yes, the mattress does have a smell upon arrival, but it’s neither chemical nor harsh. Overall, the odor did not seem that noticeable to me. It’s just that new product smell you often get when ordering items online. Because the mattress was wrapped and packaged immediately after it was made (without being displayed at the store, for example), it has that “new mattress” odor that should disappear within a couple of hours.
From our tests, there was not much of an initial smell to this mattress, so 10 is the rating of the Winkbed.
Firmness
Now, let’s move on to the next crucial aspect of this WinkBeds mattress review, the overall feel and the firmness level of this model. The WinkBed comes in 4 comfort options: Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus. I was testing one of the most popular models, which is the Luxury Firm.
Now, if we look at the firmness scale where 1 is the softest and 10 is the stiffest, the WinkBeds Luxury Firm mattress would fall somewhere around 6.5-7.0. My wife rated it as 7.0.
Since this model belongs to the hybrid mattress category, it has a very balanced feel. The coils are springy and bouncy, which means the WinkBeds mattress can offer quite responsive support. As for the pillow-top layer, it’s thick and cradling, which makes it counteract the springy coils. As a result, you can enjoy a gentle hug while receiving enough responsive support from the coils. With the WinkBed, you won’t feel stuck in your mattress; however, you can still enjoy the feeling of being enveloped by the pillow-top foam to a certain extent.
With a firmness of 6.5, I rated the Winkbed at 10 on our scoring system, as its pillow top is comfortable but still supportive.
Edge Support
Let’s talk about edge support, as this aspect is important for sleepers who require a little extra space. For example, if you get a good Queen mattress (which is the most popular size) that has strong edges, you can have more space for sleep, and you don’t have to pay extra for the additional legroom. This might come in handy if you share your bed with a significant other or simply want to sleep near the edge of the bed and feel supported nonetheless.
So, if you’re one of those sleepers who needs supportive edges, allow me to share the good news right away: the WinkBeds mattress has strong, reliable edges. This model uses special reinforcement coils around the perimeter, which allows it to offer sturdy support even near the very edge of the mattress. When I was testing the WinkBed, I never felt like I was about to roll off the edge.
The edges may compress slightly when you sit on the mattress, but they are very resilient and might even give you a little boost when getting up. This can be especially helpful if you are currently experiencing mobility issues and need to press your hands into the edge of the mattress for support or balance when moving from sitting to standing.
While sitting on the edge, I recorded a compression of about 2.25 inches, which indicates WinBed has very good edge support. I found not only are the edges of the WinkBed resilient, and able to hold up my weight easily, but the coils also offer a bit of a boost when standing. And while lying on the edge, I barely noticed any compression at the edges, and felt well-supported.
The Winkbed has some of the best edge support I’ve tested, measuring 2.25 inches due to its reinforced coils, which I rated at 9.
Motion Transfer
Let’s take a look at how the WinkBed performs in terms of motion isolation. You might have to pay more attention to motion transfer if you share your bed with a partner and don’t want to disturb them during the night (or perhaps they are a restless sleeper and you are a light sleeper). In this case, your mattress has to absorb shock from motion and prevent it from traveling across the surface.
Now, when it comes to the WinkBeds mattress, motion transfer is noticeable, but not to the extent that you would wake up from a partner moving. Of course, due to the bouncy support coils, this mattress does not perform as well as memory foam models, but the levels of motion transfer are not too critical.
Additionally, the WinkBed has a thick pillow-top that uses cradling foam. The foam responds slowly to applied pressure and nicely absorbs shock from movement.
So, if you and your partner prefer staying undisturbed during sleep, the WinkBed might be a good solution.
I measured about 4 inches on the Winkbed from where we saw the glass start to move, meaning it has good motion isolation that can be helpful for couples, but may not cover larger movements, earning a rating of 8.5.
Sinkage
WinkBeds’s Luxury Firm offers comfortable sinkage, and I felt a good balance of support and cradling while lying down. I measured the sinkage of WinkBed at around 2.36 inches, mainly due to the plush euro pillow top, which can give most sleepers enough comfort to feel well-cushioned in bed.
With 2.36 inches of sinkage, the Winkbed is suitable for body-cradling comfort that’s also supportive, earning a rating of 9.
Cooling
While lying on my Winkbed, the mattress’ temperature only reached about 90.0 degrees Fahrenheit. I never felt hot, and I found the coils did an excellent job, along with the cover and gel foam, at dispersing heat and helping me stay cool. I have a methodology behind all the mattress tests I do, which helps me discern good mattress qualities and help you decide which mattress works best for you.
The Winkbed is not the coolest in sleeping comfortably, measuring 90.0 degrees Fahrenheit for a rating of 7.5.
Response
For the most part, mattresses with coils always do well with this test, due to the bouncy nature of coils. When I compressed the WInkBed, I measured a 0.19-second partial bounce back, with full recovery at 0.29 seconds. That means you can expect the euro pillow top to give you that gentle cradle you can moderately sink into, but you won’t feel stuck when getting in or out of bed.
The Winkbed had impressive recovery speeds, measuring 0.29 seconds, fast enough for ease of movement in bed, so I gave it a rating of 10.
Bounce
I tested WinkBed to have a moderately high bounce level, which is typical for a hybrid mattress. WinkBed had a total bounce value of 9.89 inches, with my testing object reaching a compression value of 5.73 inches, and reaching a height of 4.16 inches. From these values, you will not feel stuck when trying to switch sleeping positions, all while enjoying a cradling euro top.
With a bounce measured at 9.89 inches, the WInkbed’s coils provide a responsive surface with a high bounce rate, earning a rating of 9.5.
Sex
A good mattress is one that is best for healthy, restful sleep. A great mattress is one that’s also suitable for sex. For many users, this means it’s responsive, supportive, and not restricting.
And guess what?
The WinkBeds mattress is just like this. This model is great for sex thanks to its sturdy construction and responsive support. The strong edges are also a nice bonus, in case you want to move around and use the entire perimeter. Plus, the WinkBed can help with thermoregulation when things get heated. Because the coil core is super breathable and the quilted foam layer is infused with gel, the WinkBed won’t make you feel uncomfortably hot when enjoying quality time with your partner.
Putting together my values for WinkBeds’ bounce (at 9.98 inches), and edge support (at 2.25 inches), along with some noise consideration, I found WinkBed would be an excellent choice for couples. The high bounce level, along with almost perfect edge support, is suitable for fast movements. Along with this, WInkBed offers decent thermoregulation to help keep you cool while in the bedroom.
Mixing the Bounce and Edge Support scores, the Winkbed would be a suitable option for sex with a rating of 9.5.
Durability
Another aspect I would like to mention in my review of the WinkBeds mattress is its build quality and potential durability. I’m sure you would agree that a new mattress is a serious investment, so durability is a must.
Let me give you a run down:
The WinkBed feels sturdy and quality-made. This mattress uses thick coils and dense foam, which aren’t likely to develop premature signs of wear and tear or lose their properties too soon. The cover also seems quite durable. The fabric is reasonably thick, and because of its tufted design, the cover is less likely to stretch out or develop body impressions over time. Therefore, if you decide to buy the WinkBed, you can be sure that this will be a long-term investment.
Pressure Relief
WinkBed offers considerable cushioning, boasting 5 inches of comfort layers, along with 9 inches of supportive coils and foam. Typically, a thick volume of comfort materials means there will be enough cushioning for the body to sink and adjust into. I found the euro top responded to the pressure in my muscles well, and I was evenly supported with a gentle body cradle.
How It Feels for Different Types of Sleepers
Remember, one mattress rarely suits all types of sleepers. Even if it’s the most comfortable mattress for one person, it doesn’t mean that you will also feel completely happy. That’s why, when considering buying a new mattress, it’s crucial to understand how it will perform for you specifically (considering your preferred sleep position and weight).
For this review, I was testing the WinkBeds mattress with my wife. She is a petite (110-pound) stomach sleeper. As for me, I’m an average (190-pound) side and back sleeper. After testing the WinkBed, here’s how we imagine it would work for different types of sleepers:
- Side sleepers. Both my wife and I
found this mattress (Luxury Firm option) very comfortable when sleeping on one side. We enjoy this firmness level with moderate cradling and sturdy support. However, if you prefer a more hugging feel or want your mattress to allow for more sinkage, you might need to pick a softer WinkBeds option (especially if you’re a lightweight sleeper).
- Back sleepers. This is a medium-firm
mattress, and I have to say that it works perfectly well for sleeping on the back (for both me and my wife). There’s enough support for the spine and just the right amount of sinkage for the thighs and buttocks. Thanks to this, the WinkBeds mattress managed to keep my body in a relatively straight line all through the night.
- Stomach sleepers. Now, here’s where it gets tricky. The
Luxury Firm WinkBed might work for stomach sleepers, but not for all weight categories. For me, it seemed supportive enough for this sleep position. I especially appreciated the pillow-top design that allowed me to sleep even without a pillow. As for my wife, because she is significantly lighter in weight, the WinkBeds Luxury Firm mattress seemed too firm for her in this sleep position. So, it’s safe to say that this model is not ideal for petite stomach sleepers.
Sleeping Positions: Summary
Sleeping Position | WinkBeds |
---|---|
Side Sleepers | I found the Luxury Firm version of this mattress to be quite comfortable on my side. This would suit light and average-weight sleepers under 230 pounds easily, but if your preference is to have more hug, a softer version may suit you better. Sleepers over 230 pounds may also find this mattress adequate for support. |
Back Sleepers | WinkBed has more than enough support for lightweight back sleepers, and most average-weight back sleepers will also feel supported enough. Myself, I found there was just enough sinkage for my thighs while my spine felt even and straight. However, some average-weight sleepers, or those who weigh under 230 pounds, may prefer a firmer feel. Sleepers over 230 pounds may find the mattress sinks a bit too much under their weight. |
Stomach Sleepers | I found the Luxury Firm WinkBed to feel just about right while lying on my stomach. However, lightweight sleepers or those under 130 pounds may feel the mattress is too firm, and will want to go for something softer. Likewise, some average-weight sleepers, or those under 230 pounds, may prefer a firmer surface. Sleepers over 230 pounds may find their hips sink a bit too much to sleep comfortably on their stomach. |
Other Important Information
Let’s also cover some other aspects that can make your experience with WinkBeds easier (or more complicated).
Now, the company offers a 120-night trial with the mattress, during which you can return your WinkBed and get a full refund. The returns are free, but you need to account for the mandatory 30-day break-in period. Don’t worry though, as this rule is pretty common for most mattress companies. During this time, the mattress materials will mould to the curves of your body. So, don’t be surprised if your new WinkBed starts feeling more comfortable the longer you sleep on it.
You can also exchange the mattress for a different comfort option. As you might remember, the WinkBed comes in Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus variations. If your chosen comfort option does not work for you, but you like the mattress, you can swap it for a different firmness level. However, the comfort exchange cost $49. This fee covers the delivery, removal, and recycling of your old mattress. Plus, you get a 60-day sleep trial with your new comfort option.
Now, you might also appreciate the company’s “Any Reason” 50% Off Lifetime Replacement offer. After your trial is over, you might still want to exchange the mattress for a different firmness level (or perhaps you would like a “fresh” one after some time). In this case, the company offers a 50% discount on your new WinkBeds mattress.
If, for whatever reason, you aren’t ready to pay in full for your WinkBeds mattress, you can take advantage of the additional financing options.
This model is covered by a lifetime warranty, which can be a trustworthy indication of the mattress quality. The mattress is handmade “to-order”, so there’s a lot of thought (and quality control) put into each mattress. And yes, this mattress is made in the US, so you don’t have to worry about safety standards and what might be hiding in the layers of your new WinkBeds mattress (By this, I mean potentially dangerous components).
Summary
After having tested the WinkBeds mattress thoroughly, we can clearly see both its strengths and weaknesses.
It covers the needs of pretty much any sleeper type, because it's available in multiple firmness variations. The mattress uses a winning combination of materials to achieve a balanced feel, so if you’re looking for something “in-between” (neither too resilient nor too cradling), it might be a suitable option. Additionally, the WinkBed offers sufficient back support (both my wife and I felt super comfortable sleeping on one side and our back).
Of course, if you’re a fan of enveloping memory foam, the WinkBeds Luxury Firm mattress might seem too bouncy or not have enough of a hugging feeling. If you’re feeling doubtful, you can test it for up to 120 nights to decide. Or, you can also try a softer WinkBeds model.
