Tempurpedic mattresses are very famous, but here’s the deal:

Popularity does not necessarily mean that the Tempurpedic material is better than traditional memory foam.

So, today’s review will compare Tempurpedic vs. memory foam side by side to see how they differ from each other and what makes them suitable (or unsuitable) for certain sleepers.

Tempurpedic Mattresses Explained: What Tempurpedic Is Famous For and What Makes It Special

When users try to understand the difference between Tempurpedic vs memory foam, they often feel confused.

Why? Because Tempurpedic mattresses use memory foam.

So, what makes these mattresses so special then?

The thing is, the Tempurpedic brand introduced their mattresses made of viscoelastic polyurethane foam mentioning that this was a NASA-inspired material (1). And thanks to years of advertising campaigns, the Tempurpedic brand has become associated with the NASA memory foam. Which is one of the main reasons the brand is so popular these days.

Even though there are plenty of Tempurpedic alternatives that use NASA’s foam technology, the brand still seems to dominate the market thanks to its well-established name and effective marketing.

Now, it’s also worth mentioning that Tempurpedic and memory foam mattresses feel pretty much the same. The Tempurpedic memory foam is cradling and hugging. It offers close conforming and can redistribute one’s weight evenly. The material responds to body heat and pressure, so it’s super adaptive and can deliver pinpoint support for each body part.

Despite a quite similar feel, there are some notable differences when it comes to memory foam vs. Tempurpedic comparison. And the first one is the cost. Tempurpedic mattresses belong to a much pricier category than many modern memory foam models. Now, this aspect can be explained by a number of factors (including build quality, durability, and construction of the Tempurpedic mattresses). But to tell the truth, the price factor also depends greatly on the brand’s reputation and marketing.

At the same time, Tempurpedic mattresses are famous for their durability, which may justify the higher price point. It’s also worth mentioning that many of the Tempurpedic mattresses have a smart multi-layer construction. It allows the manufacturer to achieve optimal support and comfort levels. And many memory foam mattresses, on the other hand, often have simple construction that involves 2-3 layers. Again, this may explain why Tempurpedic mattresses are so costly.

Memory Foam Mattresses Explained

Just like in Tempurpedic mattresses, regular memory foam models use the same viscoelastic material (you can check more types of foam mattresses here).

Because of that, when comparing memory foam mattresses vs Tempurpedic, it’s hard to notice a big difference in terms of the overall feel. Memory foam mattresses are just as cradling, adaptive, and conforming.

At the same time, it’s worth mentioning that there are many foam mattresses that are significantly cheaper than Tempurpedic models. That being said, not all memory foam mattresses are as durable and reliable in use as the Tempurpedic ones.

Unlike Tempurpedic, some of the cheaper foam mattresses use fiberglass as the fire barrier. And while there are plenty of memory foam mattresses without fiberglass (here’s a good example), one should remember that with Tempurpedic mattresses, there’s no such issue.

Tempurpedic vs. Memory Foam: the Good and the Bad Side by Side

Tempurpedic and regular memory foam mattresses have a lot in common.

This often makes it hard to understand which one would be better for each user.

However, by comparing the two mattress types side by side and weighing the pros and cons, one might find it easier to choose the most appealing option.

Memory foam

  • multi-layer construction in most models to achieve the highest comfort levels possible;

  • pinpoint pressure relief and close conforming;

  • low motion transfer;

  • famous for their durability.

  • a wider variety of much more affordable models than the Tempurpedic’s selection;

  • effective pressure alleviation;

  • do a great job of reducing motion transfer;

  • multiple models that use cooling components to prevent overheating at night;

  • most models come with a longer 120-night sleep trial.

  • limited in-home sleep trial (90 days);

  • expensive;

  • may sleep hot;

  • may restrict movement;

  • might have a noticeable off-gassing upon arrival;

  • mediocre edge support in many models.

  • weak edge support (unless memory foam is used in a hybrid mattress);

  • may feel restricting, which could be an issue for combo sleepers or those who have slight issues with mobility (in this case, a hybrid or an innerspring mattress may work better);

  • relatively limited durability (when compared with many of the Tempurpedic models);

  • may arrive with off-gassing (but this factor would depend on the brand).

Is Tempurpedic better than memory foam?

Tempurpedic models use the same memory foam most modern foam mattresses do. Therefore, there isn’t much difference between Tempurpedic and regular memory foam mattresses (quality ones). Some Tempurpedic models tend to be more durable, but you can also find plenty of long-lasting foam mattresses (this aspect would depend on the brand and the foam quality).

Is Tempurpedic memory foam worth it?

Tempurpedic is worth it if you are looking for a well-established, famous brand that offers durable mattresses and stands behind its product.

Wrapping Up

It’s hard to tell which one is better: Tempurpedic or memory foam.

After all, they have a lot in common.

However, comparing the pros and cons might help users make the final choice. For instance, Tempurpedic mattresses are much pricier than most memory foam models, so this brand may not work for budget shoppers. At the same time, Tempurpedic mattresses are famous for their durability and could be an excellent solution for those looking for a long-lasting investment
