What Is a Split Queen Mattress?

A Split Queen mattress consists of two mattresses that measure 30 by 80 inches. Combined, they make a standard Queen size (60 by 80 inches). However, with a Split Queen, couples have separate beds, in a way. In other words, a Split Queen size is a Queen mattress divided into two smaller mattresses

Which One Is Better: Split Queen or Standard Queen?

Not all users may dig the idea of a Split Queen bed.

But the thing is, sleeping on two separate mattresses while staying close to your partner can offer many perks.

For instance, this would come in especially handy if there’s a Split Queen adjustable base. Both partners can adjust their side any way they want without disturbing each other (and without fighting over the comfort settings if they have different preferences). A Split Queen adjustable base can also help when one of the partners is in recovery. They might need a special comfort setting, while their partner may not. And a Split Queen mattress (combined with the right base) could help solve that issue.

Using a Split Queen bed would also allow partners to choose different firmness levels for their sides. For instance, one of them may prefer firmer mattresses, and the other one – softer. With a Split Queen, they can achieve that and still share their bed. This, by the way, is beneficial for most relationships (unless one of the partners is restless or snores loudly) (1).

Another cool thing about the Split Queen size is that such mattresses are easier to transport. Instead of carrying one bulky mattress, users can move two smaller mattresses with less effort. This might be a great solution for those who move between homes frequently.

A Split mattress can also become a real savior in households that have extra-narrow doorways, especially if it’s not a bed-in-a-box mattress type. Naturally, it’s easier to fit a split mattress through smaller doorways than a regular-sized one.

What Is the Best Type of Split Queen Mattresses?

Finding a good Split Queen mattress requires shoppers to understand what they will be likelier to enjoy.

And learning more about available mattress types may help with that. Here are the most common options on the market:

  • Innerspring. Spring mattresses make the most affordable option among other types. They are famous for their bouncy feel and responsive support. Because spring beds are so resilient, they often cause motion transfer. But with a Split Queen, this issue can be avoided. Now, it’s also worth mentioning that innerspring mattresses are extremely breathable and thus, don’t sleep hot. At the same time, they aren’t ideal for side sleepers, and that’s something shoppers need to account for. The thing is, spring mattresses typically use a very moderate amount of padding. Naturally, it’s not enough to cushion one’s body properly when lying on one side.
  • Foam. Foam mattresses are probably the most popular these days. Foam is highly adaptive and does a great job of relieving pressure. That’s why a foam mattress would pair nicely with a Split Queen adjustable base. The combination of cradling foam and multiple comfort settings can offer the highest comfort levels. However, shoppers need to remember that foam is famous for sleeping hot. Therefore, hot sleepers need to be careful and choose those models that use either gel particles or an open-cell design to sleep cooler.
  • Hybrid. As the name suggests, hybrid mattresses combine different materials in each model. The main aim here is to achieve a balanced feel. The compromise between support and cushioning is reached using wrapped coils and either foam or latex (occasionally, both). Now, one of the main considerations concerning hybrid mattresses is their weight and height. They tend to be pretty bulky, which may not work for all users. Additionally, hybrids can be quite expensive.
  • Latex. Latex mattresses are a popular choice among eco-conscious consumers. These mattresses use natural materials (often organic as well) and can be a good solution for sensitive sleepers (or those who are prone to allergies). Latex is also favored for its pressure-relieving properties without feeling restricting (unlike foam). However, it’s worth noting that these mattresses are among the most expensive ones. This can be justified by their impressive lifespan, but not for all users, of course.

How Much Are Split Queen Mattresses?

Depending on the type and the brand, Split Queen mattress prices typically fall between $700 and $2,000. Of course, there are even pricier models available, but they aren’t as common in the Split size. A higher price of a Split Queen mattress often means more luxurious materials, but the variety of options narrows down in this case.

Where to Buy a Split Queen Mattress?

The most popular places where shoppers look for good Split Queen mattresses are:

Factors to Consider When Shopping for a Good Split Queen Mattress

A suitable size is not the only thing that makes a good mattress. Shoppers need to account for a few other things to make sure they make the best choice possible. Those factors include:

  • Firmness. A good mattress has to correspond with one’s sleeping style. Thus, side sleepers are usually advised to pick softer mattresses to enjoy gentle cradling for the protruding body parts. Back sleepers are recommended to choose medium to medium-firm mattresses to receive adequate support. As for stomach sleepers, they are advised to use firmer mattresses. This would help them maintain a relatively straight spine during the night.
  • Sleepers’ weight. It’s another factor that may determine the firmness of the mattress. For example, for petite individuals (less than 130 pounds), it’s better to go one step softer for each position mentioned above. And for heavier sleepers (over 230 pounds), it is recommended to go slightly firmer for each sleeping style.
  • Bed frame. A good Split Queen bed base isn’t hard to come by. Actually, it is possible to use any regular Queen-sized foundation as a Split Queen bed base (for those who aren’t looking for adjustability). But it also has to meet certain requirements. For instance, for foam mattresses, the bed slats shouldn’t be spaced too far apart (ideally, no more than 3 inches). A Split Queen bed base should also have a solid construction to provide uniform support all across the surface. A central support beam would come in handy in this case.
  • Cooling. Thermoregulation can affect one’s comfort greatly, so this aspect should be taken into consideration as well. The best cooling mattresses are innerspring and latex. Among foam mattresses, gel-infused and open-cell models tend to perform the best when it comes to a cooler sleep. Hybrid mattresses can also sleep cool or at least neutral. However, in this case, their comfort layers shouldn’t be too thick (or should use either latex or gel foam).

Highlights

  • 2 firmness and 3 thickness options to make sure more users find what suits them the best;
  • extra-long warranty for improved customer protection;
  • free after-purchase comfort exchange to achieve the highest levels of customer satisfaction.

The first item I can surely call one of the best Split Queen mattresses is the Botanical Bliss by Plushbeds. And to tell the truth, it’s hard for me to pick what makes this model the best, as it has quite a lot to boast of. But I was impressed the most by the level of customization the Botanical Bliss offers. Not only does this mattress come in a variety of firmness and thickness options, but it also allows for post-purchase adjustments. For instance, my wife felt like our medium-firm Botanical Bliss was too stiff for her, so we requested a softer layer for extra cushioning. The exchange went smoothly and fast, so my wife did not have to lose sleep.

Highlights

  • 100% natural materials to create a safe sleeping environment;
  • organic cotton cover for improved breathability and thermoregulation;
  • post-purchase adjustments for enhanced comfort.

The next model I want to introduce in this list of the best Split Queen mattresses is another Plushbeds. But this time, it’s a mattress that would be ideal for anyone who wants their sleeping environment to be safe and free from allergens. The Natural Bliss uses latex, which is naturally more resistant to dust mites and other allergens. The cover is made of organic cotton, which is super breathable and soft to the touch (so soft that I didn’t even want to put the sheets on). Plus, it is zippered, so you can take it off and wash the cover to get rid of dust and other allergens. My wife and I prefer to do that at least every 3 weeks as she often suffers from environmental allergies.

  • gel-infused comfort foam to combat overheating during the night;
  • flippable firmness to accommodate more types of sleepers;
  • 121-night trial, great for hesitant shoppers.

Now, let me warn you right away: this is an RV mattress. However, I feel like it can be a great solution for budget shoppers, as you can buy two RV mattresses (measured 30 by 80 inches) and make them into one Split Queen. And it’s going to be much cheaper than buying a regular Split Queen mattress. Besides, despite being meant for RVs, this model by Mattress Insider is very comfortable. I was a bit skeptical at first, to be completely honest. But after only two nights on this mattress, my sore back went completely tension-free. This proves that Mattress Insider makes even RV models super comfy and supportive.

F.A.Q.

What is a Split Queen mattress?

A Split Queen is the combination of two smaller mattresses measured 30 by 80 inches. They are the same size as the regular Queen (60 by 80 inches) but allow partners to enjoy different comfort levels and reduced motion transfer.

Can you feel a split mattress?

In most cases, no, but this would depend greatly on the mattress model. If the split mattress has sturdy edges, the sleepers won’t be likely to feel the gap between them.

Is a Split Queen the same as two Twins?

No. A Split Queen measures 60 by 80 inches. Two Twins put together measure 76 by 75 inches (as one Twin is 38 by 75 inches).

Summary

Shopping for a new mattress does require time. But the reward is always worth it.

When looking for a good Split Queen model, it’s crucial to pay attention to the mattress type (as not all of them work for some users). Plus, the firmness level is one of the most important factors. And since a Split Queen allows partners to pick what works for them individually, each of their favorite sleeping styles and weight should be taken into account.

Now, if you are still feeling hesitant, I think there’s a mattress that has a chance of making you happy – the Botanical Bliss by Plushbeds. This all-latex model combines support with cradling for improved comfort and better spinal alignment. But the best part is, this Split Queen mattress allows for firmness adjustments. Therefore, you can tailor its feel to your particular preferences and thus, enjoy restful sleep every single night.
