Do I need a mattress pad or mattress protector for my new Casper, Tuft & Needle, LeesaSaatva, or other online mattress? This is by far one of the most common questions I receive on my blog, and it’s long over due for a quick question and answer post.

First off, it’s important to note the differences between mattress pads and mattress protectors.

What is a mattress pad?

A mattress pad is a relatively thick piece of quilted material that sits on top of your mattress, but below your sheets. A mattress pad can help to protect your mattress to some degree from general wear and tear, and help reduce allergens, but in general you’d purchase a mattress pad to add comfort to your mattress. The primary reason I would suggest buying a mattress pad is because you’re unhappy with your current mattress and a mattress pad can be a nice short term solution to add comfort to an older or uncomfortable mattress.

If you’re buying a brand new mattress, whether it’s foam, innerspring, or otherwise, there is really no need to purchase a mattress pad.

Mattress toppers would be a similar option if you’re seeking a temporary solution to add comfort, but that’s another blog post.

What is a mattress protector?

A mattress protector also sits directly on the surface of your mattress, but below your sheets. It’s similar to a fitted sheet in the way it covers the mattress. They are generally made from cotton, polyester, or other materials, and are designed to help repel liquid and prevent other sources of damage (dirt, dust, allergens, etc). The most common use for a mattress protector is simply as a liquid resistant protector.

In the event you were to spill a drink, have an accident prone child or pet, or have a sexy-times accident, the mattress protector will help to ensure your expensive mattress stays fresh, clean, and unsoiled.

I would highly recommend a protector to anyone who is purchasing a new mattress, or already owns a mattress without a mattress protector. They are an inexpensive way to ensure your mattress stays nice for years. Most mattress protectors are fairly thin. They don’t have to be thick to do their job if they are made well. As such, they have very little impact in terms of the feel and comfort of the mattress they are on.

My wife and I have been using a pretty good and inexpensive mattress protector we purchased from Amazon when we bought our mattress. We’ve slept several times with it off to get a sense of the feel and I cannot tell any noteworthy difference in feel, comfort, or sound when the mattress protector is on vs. with it off.

In addition to protecting your mattress from damage, liquids, etc. they can also aid in reducing allergens, dust mites, and asthma issues.

So what’s right for me? Do I need a mattress protector or a mattress pad?

If you have an older mattress that you’re not terribly happy with I would recommend a mattress pad. Mattress pads are an inexpensive way to add a little life to older or otherwise uncomfortable mattresses. If it’s a new mattress, there is no need to purchase a mattress pad (assuming you are happy with the mattress).

A great mattress protector on the other hand is all but required. It’s inexpensive, protects your investment, has no visible impact, and shouldn’t dramatically change the way the mattress feels. In my book it’s a no brainer.

  1. Well, I don’t have a mattress as of now! You can say I’m awkward! But I have some other organic solution for this!

I think one can be a substitute for another as well!

  3. This is a question for a full-size mattress we will be buying for a college student. At home his sheets sometimes come off the corners so he ends up sleeping partially on the 5 sided mattress protector, which is not an issue because I wash it regularly. For school I was thinking about getting a thin mattress protector (6 sided encasement) to protect his mattress from bed bugs, stains, dust mites etc. But I have little hope he will remove it, wash it and put it back on regularly, especially with the extra work of the 6 sided. So I was thinking about adding a fitted mattress pad that he can remove and wash with his sheets. So when the sheets slip off and he sleeps on the mattress pad, both get washed? Is there any reason not to use both the protector and pad? Thank you!

  4. what is the lifespan of a quality mattress pads such as the eLuxurySupply bamboo mattress pad? meaning how long is the loft supposed to last for and provide comfort?

    Reply
    • Mattress pads, such as the eLuxurySupply mattress pad, should last at least three years.

Not quite as long as a mattress, but certainly a less expensive alternative to purchasing a new mattress.

  5. Got a new nest alexander hybrid with medium firmness. I like the matress but would like to make it just a touch softer (like from a 5.5/10 to a 4.5/10). Need to get a matress protector anyways so i was thinking of getting one with some padding. Are there any good thin matress pads that will do the job of a protector but also add some softess without significantly voiding the technological comfort benefits and features my new alexander hybrid matress itself offers?

  6. Hello! We have tried both the Casper and Purple mattress, my hubby likes Casper better even though it is WAY too hard for me :( But with a memory foam topper on it, we have come to a good compromise. We are using the Casper mattress protector currently but can still return as we are only 65 days into our trial. How would you say the mattress protectors you recommended above compare to the Casper protector? We like it, but it is pricey and we figured if the others are better, we would rather save some money. I would love your feedback, thanks!

    Reply
    • Oh also I was inclined to get the Purple protector but HATE that there is no trial period. Some of the negative reviews say it is ‘plastic’ and noisy. The Casper is soft and quiet, so I am scared to try the Purple and be stuck with it!

  8. Great article. Just bought a split king (adjustable) hybrid set with some advanced cooling “technology” (Simmons ‘Black Ice’). I travel a lot and end up with periodic bed-bug presence. With the need to retain the mattress cooling as well as bed-bug containment, what is your recommendation? Waterproof (as opposed to resistant) is not a requirement.

    • Thank you for your kind words, Brian!

Based on the information you’ve shared, I would recommend a full encasement protector. A couple of my favorites are the Malouf encasement, Bedcare, and eLuxurySupply full encasement protector. Each of these can be found on my mattress protector reviews page – https://sleepopolis.com/mattress-protector-reviews/

Based on your needs, it sounds like the Bedcare is probably the best option. It’s full encasement, bed bug prevention, but not waterproof. So it will sleep cooler.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help, thanks!

    • Thanks for all the great information. I just bought a new Hotel Collection mattress at Macy’s and they offered a mattress protector plan. After reading your articles, I’m convinced a mattress protector is the right way to go, but Macy’s is pretty pricey. I have a couple of questions about the purple mattress protector. Is there any “crinkly” noise at all due to the material being water resistant, does it protect from dust mites etc and does it sleep hot at all?
      Thanks!!

    • The “crinkly” noise on the Purple protector is definitely better than your typical protector, however, it’s not perfect. I’ve only tested a couple of waterproof protectors that are less noisy (however, the price of those is quite steep).

It does a fine job against dust mites and sleeping cool as well. I did not notice it creating any heat retention problems. With respect to dust mites, as with noise, it just depends on how perfect you need it to be. It’s still a 5-sided protector, meaning it is not 100% dust proof, but will take care of most of your needs. If you need absolute protection you’ll want to go with an encasement protector.

In any case, what I like about the Purple protector is it performs at a very good to great performance level across the board and is fairly inexpensive as well. Just really solid all around.

Please let me know if there are any other questions I can help with. Thanks!

  9. The clear demarcation between mattress pad and mattress protector has been clearly explained in this blog, which makes it easy for us to now take our pick. Considering, there are ample of options available, it won’t be a big deal to find a quality kind.

  10. Hi – I’m looking for a mattress protector but I don’t want waterproof because the polyurethane liners make the memory foam much too hot. I don’t want anything with a lot of fill because I don’t want to change the feel of the mattress Any ideas?

  11. We just bought a cooling gel foam mattress & we are wondering if we can put the mattress protector on it right away? Or should we wait the 24-72 hours?

    Reply
    • I would allow your mattress to decompress for about 24 hours before placing the protector on the mattress.

  12. I recently bought a King size Purple mattress, but they are out of mattress protectors for Queen/King/California King with no known availability.

Is there anything similar/suitable in regard to elasticity, cooling and quality? I wouldn’t mind having a second protector that can later become the backup anyhow.

    Reply
  13. I just baught and Endy bed, do you think a purple mattress protector will change the way the endy feels? Also are you suppose to put bed sheets over a mattress protector? I always use bed sheets, but not sure if having a protector and bed sheets is a good idea? I’ve never had a protector before. Or will bed sheets be enough?

    Reply
    • The Purple protector should not change the feel of the Endy mattress. This protector is thin and hugs the mattress quite tightly, therefore allowing the mattress to act as it would without the protector.

Additionally, I would recommend placing sheets over the protector as well. Sleeping directly on the protector may not be as comfortable as your sheets.

  14. We recently bought the Casper mattress (prior to watching your reviews). I’m not thrilled with it (not soft enough for me) but my husband loves it. Im wishing we bought the Purple instead but it’s too late to switch since I’m passed the 100 day trial period.

I’m looking to purchase a mattress topper/pad that will add comfort and cushion. We both tend to be hot sleepers.

Also looking for a protector and sheets that will fit nicely with the Casper and whatever topper/pad you suggest.

    Thanks!

  15. Hi, first of all thank you for all of your reviews and information. It has been incredibly helpful in making selections. So I have decided on the Loom & Leaf mattress, and now need the mattress protector. I want to avoid adding a different feel to my mattress, a heavy layer that feels it is more focused on kids wetting the bed, one that retains heat, or any plastic-y noise etc. What would you recommend?

    Reply
    • Hi Jenny,

Thank you for your kind words!

There are a couple of different options here. The two I would recommend are the Purple and Bedcare. If you’re looking for a lower priced protector with no bells and whistles, this protector is a great option. It’s thin and does a nice job of activating invisible. On the other hand, you can spend a little more money and get the Bedcare full encasement protector. This protector will literally protect every side of your mattress. Although it is a bit more expensive, it does a fine job of providing a high level of protection. Importantly, it does not protect against liquid spills…this makes it great if you aren’t concerned about liquid protection, because it can breathe that much easier.

  16. We just recently purchased a Helix. We got a protector from Walmart that seems a bit too thick and takes away some of the feeling from the mattress. What would you recommend for this mattress?

  18. Hello. I’m buying a Purple mattress and already have a new Malouf Sleep Tite Pr1me mattress protector. Do you think that will be sufficient, or should I buy Purple’s mattress protector?

    Reply
    • Hi Brendon,

Great choice regarding the Purple mattress. The Malouf Sleep Tite protector should be just fine with that mattress.

In any case, I’d recommend trying your existing protector first…as long as you don’t feel like it’s impacting the performance of the mattress then there’s no need to buy something new.

    • Generally, yes, however, you would want to verify that with the mattress pad manufacturer. Some mattress protectors may melt due to the heat, which could cause them to not function properly.

  19. I bought a soft that is supposed to be plush mattress with a box spring and a mattress protector but I put all my sheets on the bed after I protector on and it doesn’t feel as plush but it feels firmer as it was In the store so could it be the the mattress protector that making it firmer

    Reply
    • It’s a possibility.

Have you tried sleeping on the mattress without the mattress protector?

One thing to note, mattresses in store are almost always softer than the new mattress you get. This is because the in-store mattress is already broken in considerably. So that’s something to bear in mind also. It can take several months for the mattress to fully break in.

    • Hello! We have a king size Tuft and Needle that is < 1 year old. It is a too firm for my husband, who is a back sleeper. I am a side and stomach sleeper who hates saggy and/or soft mattresses, especially when sharing a bed, so I love that the firmness of the mattress means I'm not sleeping on a hill. Having said that, I could tolerate a slightly softer mattress. Could a mattress topper help, and which might you recommend to pair with a tuft and needle? (we live in a hot climate in summer, so nothing too warm underneath!)

    • Hi Val,

A mattress topper could certainly help. I have reviewed a few different toppers, all of which can be found here: https://sleepopolis.com/mattress-topper-reviews/

It’s hard to pick one favorite. Each are good for different reasons. If you have time, take a quick look at each of these and let me know what you think. I would be more than happy to answer any product specific questions for you.

  20. Hi,
I am preparing to open a B&B and want to make sure bed bugs wont be a problem. I have been advised by the place I am buying the mattress (Sleep Country) to get a bed bug bag for both the mattress and box spring as well as a mattress cover because the bed bug bag is difficult to remove between guests so it can stay in place while I just remove the mattress cover along with the sheets between guests. Would you agree with this?

  21. Hi Sleepopolis,

I bought a quite good matress from Ikea a while ago. However the cover/pad got stained and now I am facing the potential issue of having bed bugs (to be confirmed by a specialist). I am intending to throw away the matress cover (it has zippers) but it is quite difficult to buy another cover (ikea does not seem to have one). Can a pad with zipper replace such a cover? Any orher option or replacement for such a cover? Also planning to put a waterproof and anti bed bug protection on top of that pad. Any thoughts? Many thanks.

  22. I got a Leesa mattress and a protector from Amazon (LINENSPA Premium Mattress Protector), and I swear the bed didn’t conform to my body as well with it on. Is it possible its interfering with some body heat transfer that’s key to the mattress’s functionality? Or is that not how these beds work.

Also, I’m considering a mattress pad or topper for just my side of the bed since my husband loves the Leesa as is, but I would like just a little more cushyness when I hop in bed. Wondering if this would also effect the heat transfer / support functionality? And if not, do you have recommendations for a thing pad or topper that would make the Leesa just a *hair* more soft to the touch? Don’t want a big overstuffed feather bed or anything. Thanks!

    Reply
    • It’s possible, but unlikely. The memory foam within the Leesa is heat reactive, but the Avena (which is the top layer) is not.

A new mattress pad / topper can definitely impact the performance. You just want to make sure you select a good mattress pad. I would recommend you take a look at eLuxury’s bamboo mattress pad. It’s a quilted mattress pad, sleeps quite cool, and can add a little extra cushion and softness to your side of the bed. Take a look here – https://sleepopolis.com/mattress-topper-reviews/eluxurysupply-bamboo-mattress-pad-review/

  23. We have had a Purple mattress for about 7 months and absolutely love it.
As fall approaches my wife would like to get a dual sided heated mattress pad so she can warm her side of the bed before getting in to it.
Any concern with using a heated mattress pad on the Purple mattress?

    • It shouldn’t be a problem, but I would definitely recommend chatting with Purple to confirm that. Some companies are particular about mattress pads and it can void your warranty in those cases…but they are pretty rare. You should be fine.

  24. I bought a Leesa recently and the lucid mattress protector that you recommended. I also bought a sheet set from Target but as I unpacked the sheets, it occurred to me that the mattress protector essentially acted as a fitted sheet itself. Should I put the fitted sheet over the mattress protector? Seems like overkill but I didn’t know if that’s something that I should do or not. Thanks!

    Reply
    • The Lucid protector is relatively soft, so it could function as the top layer of your bedding if you preferred. For most cases I would still recommend using a fitted sheet though.

  25. just bought a lees mattress. looking for a mattress pad cover that will fit the 10″ leesa mattress nicely, perfectly. so far i have only found mattress pad covers that fit up to 15″-20″ mattresses which leaves a lot of loose material to be stuffed under mattress. anyone know of a mattress pad cover that would fit a 10″ mattress?????

    • If you are consistently sleeping with the foam topper on the mattress, then I would go ahead and include the topper and the mattress under the protector. No need to get a separate protector for the topper.

Among the Malouf 5 sided protector brand, there seem to be several options:
    – Smooth
    – Omniphase
    – Icetech

Any sense which of these is best, and/or if its worth upgrading to one of the higher end models?

    Thanks!

    Reply
    • Great choice. The top tier Malouf mattress protector is their new Ice-tech model. If you’re a very hot sleeper I think it’s worth spending the extra money on that one.

If you’re looking to spend a little less, the Omniphase 5 sided protector is my next favorite. It’s just a very solid protector and a great value.

  28. We bought and are expecting our new Casper mattress to arrive today. I have always used a mattress cover (not pad) on my former mattresses, but the Casper saleswoman told us to not use a cover on this mattress because it would effect the mattresses ability to “cool” you down- which was an attractive aspect to this mattress. Still seems weird to me to not use a cover. Do you have any insight on this?

    Reply
    • Personally, I recommend using mattress protectors. Essentially, they act as the protection for your mattress investment as well as the overall protector for your mattress. Accidents happen when we least expect them, therefore it’s better to be fully protected than to ruin your mattress from an unexpected event.

  29. Hi,

I recently purchased a Helix mattress and want to get a new mattress protector. Leaning toward the Malouf that is discussed in your mattress protector reviews but curious if you think there is a brand particularly well-suited for the Helix. Thanks in advance for any advice.

  30. I found out that my bed has bed bugs so I was wondering if a mattress protector is something I should look into getting to protect from bed bugs, like these: Also I was wondering where I might get one at a low price, because they seem expensive. I would really appreciate your help.

  31. Hey Sleepopolis,

I just bought a Leesa mattress after reading your review. It was a huge help. My significant other and I are both stomach sleepers and finding pillows and mattresses has proved very difficult. Haven’t got my Leesa yet, but looking forward to it.

My question to you: what mattress cover do you recommend (if any)?

    And

    What sheets do you recommend?

As a stomach sleeper, I sleep very warm. That’s why I gravitated to the Leesa.

For pillows we have: 2 Sealy Posturepedic Down Soft pillows and 2 Bedgear Align Stomach Sleeper pillows. Both are awesome! Although the down ones tend to be preferenced. I hope that can help some stomach sleepers out there.

    Thanks,

    • Hi Mike,

Congrats on your Leesa purchase! Regarding sheets and a mattress protector, there are a few different options I recommend:

Sheets – Brooklinen, Bedgear, and Malouf are three excellent sets that can all be found on my sheet reviews page – https://sleepopolis.com/sheet-reviews/
Protectors – Malouf 5 Sided protector and the Bedgear Vertex protector. Both of these are top notch and should do a great job protecting your mattress for a long time. – https://sleepopolis.com/mattress-protector-reviews/

Hopefully this helps make your decision much easier!

  32. I looked into several of the mattress protectors you mentioned and many of the critical reviews are full of disputes about whether or not they’re waterproof as claimed. The Sleep Tite protector says that after one or two washes, the waterproof ability is diminished. And the LUCID Premium Hypoallergenic 100% Waterproof one you link to in the article has a ton of reviews that say it’s not waterproof at all and even when following the instructions for first time wash, people are reporting the waterproof barrier splits and fails. We just bought the Purple mattress and before it arrives I’d like to have something to protect it (we have two dogs). Any other suggestions? Thanks! (PS – really impressed with how active this site is and how quickly you reply!)

    Reply
    • I’ve seen some of those concerns about the Sleep Tite and Lucid protectors and they are not entirely without merit. In my testing of these protectors I did not experience the issues that many of these users brought up.

I will say, you do have to wash / dry these very carefully. Any level of heat can cause the protector material to melt.

That said, it sounds like you need / want something a little better. Especially with a mattress like the Purple, it’s worth stepping up in quality. I would recommend this protector from Bedgear https://sleepopolis.com/bedgear-dritec-protector/

  33. We just got a Casper and I’m wondering what you’d suggest to keep the softness and properties (comfort, temperature, etc) of the mattress, while protecting it. I would prefer it not to be crinkly or slippery. I didn’t mind our old matress pad, it was 100% cotton and only about 1/3 inch think, but I don’t want to mess up the new Casper! Thanks!

If you want something a little cheaper, but still work very well. Go with the Bedgear dri-fit protector. This protector uses the same type of performance polyester material that Purple recommends for their sheets. See here: https://sleepopolis.com/bedgear-dritec-protector/

  36. I bought a loom and leaf relaxed firm mattress based on your comprehensive review of it, which I can’t thank you enough for it. Right now I have a regular bed sheet on. Like you said, mattress protectors are good to keep the longevity of the bed. My only concern is if I did buy one for my L&L, will it diminish the cooling and breathability of my address?

    Reply
    • A good mattress protector should not take away from your mattress at all. The job of the mattress protector is to protect and that’s all. Therefore, your mattress should retain the cooling characteristics it currently possesses. If you’re really worried about cooling you can go with something like the Bedgear Vertex protector – https://sleepopolis.com/bedgear-vertex-protector/ Easily the most impressive protector I’ve seen with regards to cooling. The vertex material had a cool to the touch feel and breathes well.

  37. Thanks for the post. I already have a mattress pad on an old mattress. Do I need a mattress protector also? I had assumed no (that a mattress pad can serve as adequate protection) but was not sure after your comment, “A mattress protector on the other hand is all but required.” If I still need a protector on my old mattress, please clarify.

    Reply
    • Not all mattress pads double as mattress protectors. If you have one that can, then yes, no need to buy another. But you will just want to make sure you have some type of protection. Either a dedicated mattress protector or a mattress pad that can also double as a mattress protector. Keeping spills, dust, dirt, sweat, and other filth away from your mattress will help to extend the life much further.

  38. I recently purchased a Purple mattress online. I am very excited for it to arrive, and would like to find a good quality mattress protector and sheets to go with it. https://sleepopolis.com/sheet-reviews/bedgear-sheets-review/

They aren’t cheap, but they are incredible looking and hug tight to any mattress. I tested them on a 10″ mattress (in addition to thicker mattress) and even with a thinner 10″ mattress they did an amazing job of staying put and looking great. The material they use is super elastic so they won’t move around on you.

    • I do indeed have experience with this material. Eucalyptus fibers are also known as Tencel. I have tested several Tencel sheet sets and was very impressed. While I have not tested any Tencel mattress protectors personally, I have had the opportunity to meet with ProtectaBed in person and take a look at their protectors. All in all, ProtectaBed’s products seem well made and should do a good job protecting your mattress.

  40. I am considering ordering a Casper mattress for my aunt. Here are the issues:

First, there is an issue of incontinence with fairly frequent seepage through her protective garments onto the bed.

Second, my aunt is a germophobe who is terrified of both spider mites and the possibility of bedbugs (which she has never experienced).

She is insisting that whatever mattress she gets be able to be encased in some sort of a zippered enclosure that can wiped down with a disinfectant at least weekly. The terrible old mattress she currently sleeps on is encased in two layers of thick zippered vinyl, topped by a mattress pad and then by a fitted sheet. She is much less worried about comfort than about sanitary issues. Given the horrible mattress she is sleeping on currently, I am guessing that she could sleep on anything as long as tics be, in effect, sterilized at least weekly.

Question: can any of you experts recommend an encasement that will not ruin any benefits of a Casper mattress but which can be wiped down with a disinfectant on a frequent basis? Thank you for your help.

    • What protector out there won’t sleep hot. I have a temperpedic flex supreme its real comfortable but sleeps hot if I’m on my back. I have tried a couple protectors but they don’t breath and retain the heat like a bag. I’m currently on a serta outlast matress pad seems to be doing OK but I still need a fan on me at times. I will also be trying bamboo sheets to help with keeping the bed cool.

  41. Would the Lucid premium mattress cover you recommend be okay for a Loom & Leaf mattress? The Naturepedic waterproof organic protector sounds nice, but it’s much more than I want to spend. Thanks for your help.

    Reply
    • The most important aspect for a protector that’s over a mattress with very good cooling attributes (gel or otherwise) is that you want the mattress to still be able to breathe. I would avoid any protector that uses cheaper barrier materials for waterproofing (ex. stay away from any type of plastic, PVC, rubber, etc.).

I just finished my review of the Naturepedic waterproof organic protector and I’ve been very impressed with it. It does a great job in terms of facilitating breathability. I think it would meet your needs well. You can see my review here: https://sleepopolis.com/mattress-protector-reviews/naturepedic-organic-waterproof-mattress-protector-review/
